Best Treatments for Depression

In this day and age of technological and medical advances you would think that we had one sure fire best treatment for depression. The truth is that whether the treatment is psychotherapy, some form of medication or exercise, what works for one paitent may not work for another.

Just like there are different forms of depression there are different treatments available to help with depression. The idea is that you have to find the right one that is effective for you. Just because your doctor or therapist recommends a treatment and it didn't work doesn't mean that your depression isn't treatable, it just means it isn't the best treatment for your depression.

So what are there best treatments for depression? There are a variety of different treatments for depression, involve:

1. Antidepressants - There's a wide range of antidepressant medications that can be used to help people who suffer from severe depression. The important thing to remember is that drugs do not treat the depression, they treat the symptoms of the depression. There are still underlying reasons or issues as to why the depression came about in the first place which need to be dealt with.

2. Psychotherapy - also known as "talk therapy" where you work through your depression through talking about your issues with a therapist. The results do not come overnight however, many find that just expressing what they lifts the weight they are carrying around and brings about some reflief. There are a few different forms of psychotherapy, such as:

a. cognitive behavioural therapy - where you identify and change the thought and behaviour patterns. When you suffer from depression you tend to think negatively and cognitive behaviourial teaches you have to recognise the negative thoughts and work at changing them.

b. interpersonal therapy - looks at how depression can be connected to troubled emotional relationships

c. psychodynamic therapy - links depression to traumas and/or conflicts which occurred earlier in life, especially during childhood.

d. group therapy - you can share experiences with others who suffer from depression and listen and share what contributed to theirs and your depression. In a group environment with a therapist.

3. herbal remedies - there has been a lot of interest in using herbs to treat depression. It is important to know that even though herbal remedies are "natural" it doesn't mean that they are safe. Some do carry a risk potential and it is best to discuss any herbal alternative with your doctor and/or therapist.

In addition to what your doctor or therapists recommends as the best treatments for depression, there are other depression tips that you can put into practice on your own which will go hand in hand with your treatment.

There are no best treatments for depression, no one sure pill and/or therapy that you can take and it will end your depression for good. It is a matter of dicussing your depression with your doctor openly to find the best treatment for your depression and go from there. If what you are doing isn't working, then go back to your doctor or therapist discuss it with them and find something until it is effective for you.
