What Is Manic Depression

Of the forms of depression which affects many people manic depression or bipolar is actually considered as one of the more severe forms of depression that people become prone to.

Manic depression known for a sudden and extreme change in a person's mood, is called manic depression because manic = mania refers to the 'ups' while depression refers to the 'downs'. We have all experienced erratic changes in our moods at one time or another. These so-called mood swings could be attributed to PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or perhaps even stress. But when these mood swings become more drastic, like getting irked even by the littlest or simplest of things, flying off the handle over some little trival situation, this may not be just a sign of a bad day. When getting irked means you'll cuss and swear at some poor unsuspecting period or/and throw absurd tantrums, this may already be the start of Manic depression.

There is no set time that these "peaks" and/or "valleys" will occur. When the "ups or peaks" hit it is a time when a person may feel their thoughts racing, their behaviour may be agressive, they may feel extremely irritable. Therapists say that someone suffering from Manic depression may have these so-called manic 'periods' for a day or as long as a week or even longer.

When it comes to the so-called 'low' or 'valley' periods, a person suffering from Manic depression may experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from actual depression. They may actually experience feelings of worthlessness and being unloved may start to corrupt the individual's mind. Other symptoms could be, showing guilt, extreme sadness, anxiety attacks, feeling of not belonging, extreme pessimism and obvious loss for pleasure. According to therapists, an individual who is depressed consistently for more than a week can officially be diagnosed as someone who is suffering from Manic depression.

In spite of being one of the most common, yet severe type of depressive disorder, Manic depression, can be treated. A treatment regime may consist of taking medications, seeing a therapist or a combination of both. It does take a committment from the person who is suffering from manic depression to do what is necessary in order to help themselves and enjoy a more fulfilled life.

Manic depression can be helped through using natural alternatives as well. It is better to discuss these alternative with your health professional who will guide you through the tools that are available to you.
