Depression

We have all felt sad or down in the dumps and it's all we can do to just drag ourselves to face the "world." About one out of 10 Adults suffers from depression at one point or another and research has shown that our feelings can certainly have an detrimental affect on our health and it's because of that, that we should consult with our family doctor.

Depression doesn't discriminate, women, men, young and old are at risk of becoming depressed. There is no single cause for depression and quite often it is a combination of "things."

You may have no idea why you are depressed, but whatever the cause depression is not just a state of mind. Some of the more common factors for the cause of your depression, "could" be:

Family history - depression can run in families for generations

Trauma and stress - you can become depressed over changes in your life and/or lifestyle

Physical conditions - a serious medical condition can cause you to be depressed and in fact depression could make the medical condition even worse because it weakens your immune system.

There are many causes that can contribute to your depression, what some people fail to realise is the fact that depression is real and it does affect your over-all health. The cause is as important to understand as the symptoms, some of which include:

  • regular feelings of sadness
  • irritability, or tension
  • decreased interest or pleasure in usual activities or hobbies
  • loss of energy
  • feeling tired despite lack of activity
  • a change in appetite, with significant weight loss or weight gain
  • a change in sleeping patterns, such as difficulty sleeping, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much
  • restlessness or feeling slowed down
  • decreased ability to make decisions or concentrate
  • feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt
  • thoughts of suicide or death

If you have depression, know that you are not alone and that there is help that you can seek. In conjunction with that you can do things that will help you along your way to feeling better and healthy, here are a few to help:

Avoid alcohol - alcohol can make your depression worse, you might think it will help but, it doesn't.

Do what you like to do - EVEN IF YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT, force yourself to get out with friends, talk a walk, or do whatever your hobby is.

Set realistic goals - you are just going to add to your depression by focusing on the things that you "should" be doing. Don't put the added pressure on yourself. Take it one-day-at-a-time or even one-task-at-a-time. Slow easy steps wins the race too!

Every day can feel daunting when you are depressed. The most important thing you can do is recognize the signs and get the help and support you need to help you through!
